Sweet 16 (A letter to my sister)

Lovely Brit,

Wow! Today is your big day. You turned 16! You're turning into such a lovely young lady and you're growing up so fast. I wish I was there to help celebrate your special day with you but I want you to know how proud I am of you. Life is going to keep coming at a faster pace, but I want you to know these things along the way.

Remember these things about life:

1.) You're best friends may not always be your best friend. Friends grow apart because they experience different things in life and lose communication. Some friends may do things that you don't agree with; don't follow in their footsteps. Once you realize the ones who will stick by your side through thick and thin, then you will know who your true friends are in life.
2.) People are not always nice. They will take advantage of how sweet you are, will be greedy and selfish, and may hurt you more than you can imagine. Some of these people are just jealous of how beautiful you are inside and out and want to see you fall because they are unhappy with themselves. All you can do is keep your head up and keep on with your life.
3.) Grandpa's lesson in life: Always look for the good in people. People make mistakes, they are only human. Give them a second chance: they deserve that. Learn to forgive. If they make the same mistake again, don't give them a third chance. And sometimes you may have to learn to forgive yourself before you can forgive them. And remember, because one person may have hurt you in a certain way, doesn't mean another one wants to do the same thing to you.
4.) Enjoy life. Laugh often and act silly. Don't dwell on your mistakes. Don't ever believe that you are never good enough. Because you are good enough; you just have to prove people wrong. Sometimes in life, there will be bad things that happen, but that is what makes you stronger. And remember there is no such thing as "perfect". Besides, being perfect would be so boring.
5.) You will fall in love. Some lucky boy may hold your heart; however he may not be the right one for you. You will believe that he is and no matter what anyone else tells you, you won't listen to them until you learn this yourself. All I can say is that boys come and go and there will be heartbreaks. You may even break some hearts.  Listen to your gut, if you feel like something is wrong, it probably is. Don't ever settle.

A boy needs to treat you like a princess and should tell you that he loves you every day. He should be one that will never intentionality hurt you and should never take advantage of you. He should be your best friend and someone you can depend on no matter what. He should not force you to do things that you don't want to do.

Once you know you found the right one: When you think he deserves someone so much better than what you deserve, however, he only wants you.

6.) Life is not fair. You may not get that job that you dream of, you may not be able to afford the thing that you want, that boy not love you back, your best friend may drift away, you may not have the answer to something that means so much to you. I can't explain why this happens or most importantly, why this is happening to you. Life doesn't come easy, and sometimes in life you have to face that huge mountain in front of you; try your best.
7.) Don't ever lose your faith.  Sometimes you will lose ones in life that matter so much to you and you will have a million different questions all posing the same thing: "Why?" Some things you will never understand and life will not stop for your grief, no matter how much you are hurting. Always look up to God. He will guide you, even if you don't see the results right away.
8.) Take lots of pictures. They are a part of your life that tells a story. Don't forget to make some silly photos too that will make you laugh later on and some of those great memories that you can say, "Oh yeah. That was a great time".
9.) You are responsible for what you do. No one else can take responsibility for the choices you make in life. Try to make them good ones. Don't regret them because it poses too many problems for your future. If you make a mistake, admit it, try to fix it and move on.
10.) It's not what you have in life, it's who you have by your side that matters. People take things for granted and feel like they deserve things. Some people feel like they have to have certain items in their life that will make them happy. A brand new spankin' car and a million dollars will not make you happy. People make you happy and thankful to be alive. Those are the type of people you want to surround yourself by.

I love you sis. I will always be here for you no matter what. I hope your day and every day afterwards is incredible. Happy birthday!

  2. What great advice! (I'd like to add, always back up the pictures you take. We didn't, and when our harddrive died, we lost all of our honeymoon, etc, photos. Dang.)

    LOVE the green bathroom!! :jealous:
